Welcome Turtle Families!

Welcome to our daily blog! We use it to share daily updates on our classroom, reflections on our learning with children, and photographs. We are so excited that so many people are sharing in the Turtle Day! Extended family, friends, neighbors, educators, etc, are also encouraged to follow the blog!
One of the wonderful aspects of blogging is that it allows real-time interaction between home and school. Is your child talking about what we are doing in school? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you interested (or even an expert!) in something we are studying? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you planning an outing with your child to extend the classroom learning? Leave us a comment and invite other families along!
We also have a section call, "Learn More About..." When we write each post, we tag it with relevant topics. And so if you wanted to see what we have been doing with, for instance, science, you would click on that tag, and see all the posts about science.

Sometimes Play Looks a Lot Like Reading, Writing, and Chemistry

The Writing Center was a happening place today! Children used colored pencils and scissors, working on strengthening their fine motor control. After they completed their work, the teacher would ask if they wanted to add any words to their work and they would watch as the teacher wrote the words they dictated. This kind of dictation is a great way of connecting spoken words and written words.

In the house, children "read" stories to each other, retelling familiar stories or making up the stories from the pictures, two important pre-literacy skills!

On Thursday, we had used a graph to decide if we were going to make flubber or play dough, and flubber was the most popular choice. And so today we set to work on making our flubber. Mixing the hot water, Borax, and glue, we made this amazing substance! It was so cool to watch the chemical process take place before our eyes! (*helpful tip: if flubber gets in clothes, hair, carpet, etc, white vinegar gets it out in a jiffy!)
During Movement with Missy, we've been working on obstacle courses, and today, Missy added several new elements! The Turtles quickly mastered the balance beam, even experimenting with walking backwards.
The Monkey Jump Mat was trickier. They had to place their feet and hands on the prints, and then *jump* their feet around to the other side!

The springboard is definitely a favorite!
