Welcome Turtle Families!

Welcome to our daily blog! We use it to share daily updates on our classroom, reflections on our learning with children, and photographs. We are so excited that so many people are sharing in the Turtle Day! Extended family, friends, neighbors, educators, etc, are also encouraged to follow the blog!
One of the wonderful aspects of blogging is that it allows real-time interaction between home and school. Is your child talking about what we are doing in school? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you interested (or even an expert!) in something we are studying? Leave us a comment and let us know! Are you planning an outing with your child to extend the classroom learning? Leave us a comment and invite other families along!
We also have a section call, "Learn More About..." When we write each post, we tag it with relevant topics. And so if you wanted to see what we have been doing with, for instance, science, you would click on that tag, and see all the posts about science.

The Opposite of Meanness

We met today with the First Graders. A couple of weeks ago, we left them a note asking for their help with our meanness research. It turns out that our note spurred their own investigation, and they had created a book called, "The Opposite of Meanness." Each child took a turn reading his or her page, and the Turtles listened with rapt attention.
They had many ideas about kindness, nice words, problems solving, taking turns, and even "tolerance." They have a few more pages to do, and then they will deliver it to us next week. The Turtles are continuing to build their understanding of what we need to replace our meanness with, particularly around problem solving. They are catching on the idea of getting a teacher when there is a problem. Tamara and Fran have been talking about inviting some of the Pre-K children back to the Turtle room to (re)introduce the idea of the Peace Table, working on transferring the power of problem solving from teachers to Turtles.

Back at the EC, sand was the name of the game. Early in the morning, we discovered that all the letters from our alphabet puzzle were missing! Soon they discovered them in the bucket of sand!

Then later on the playground, Barry and Tom delivered sand to our sandbox. The Turtles quickly set about opening up the sand bags. It was a hard work, but these were just the inventive kids for the job!
